HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE IN NAIROBI
Sept 6th 2023
The inaugural Africa Climate Summit #ACS23 has concluded, culminating in the unveiling of ‘The Nairobi Declaration’ by H.E. President of the Republic of Kenya, Dr. William Samoei Ruto. This declaration outlines Africa’s position on climate change and sets a course from Nairobi to CoP 28 and beyond, with the support of African Heads of State and government.
The Nairobi Declaration, emphasises Africa’s commitment to addressing climate change, recognizing the continent’s vulnerability despite limited historical contributions to global warming. It highlights the urgent need for collective action to reduce emissions, secure climate finance, and promote sustainable development. The declaration also calls for reforms in the multilateral financial system and proposes a global carbon taxation regime to fund climate-positive investments.
H.E. President William Samoei Ruto stated at the unveiling of the Nairobi Declaration, “The Nairobi Declaration we present today articulates Africa’s stance on the path forward in Climate Action. It emphasises the crucial aspects the international community must address to ensure the effective, cohesive, and sustainable fulfilment of humanity’s economic and ecological imperatives.”
