Sept 4th2023
President William Ruto officially opened the inaugural Africa Climate Summit #ACS23 co-hosted by the Kenyan Government and the African Union Commission at the Kenyatta International Convention Center. The #ACS23 is set to run from the 4th to the 6th of September 2023.
In his opening speech, H.E. President William Samoei Ruto declared, “This Summit is a moment to envision a bold and affirmatively transformative African future. We are here to picture a continent that connects markets, links resource demands, and unlocks economies of scale—an economic backbone of a decarbonized world. Let’s focus on possibilities, for the future is not something we wait for; it’s something we actively shape.”
During the opening session on Monday, the youth, who had come together prior to the summit, presented the Africa Youth Climate Declaration to the Heads of State from across Africa. They passionately urged these leaders to champion the youth’s recommendations and integrate them into the Nairobi Declaration.
On the #ACS23 Official Opening that was also a Ministerial Day, African ministers took the lead in most activities / plenary sessions allowing Heads of State to attend to their other responsibilities.
In parting,” It is time for climate actors to move from the North vs. South conversation, let’s join forces in ending the climate crisis.” ~H.E. Dr William Samoei Ruto.
