KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE AFRICA CLIMATE SUMMIT #ACS23 DAY 2

The second day of the inaugural #ACS23, known as the ‘Presidential Day Program,’ commenced with a high-profile opening ceremony attended by 20 African Heads of State and notable dignitaries, among them were Kenya’s President William Ruto, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Africa Development Bank President Akinwunmi Adesina, and COP28 President-designate Sultan Al Jaber. Together, they embarked on a journey to advance Africa’s green growth objectives.
The day began with welcoming remarks from Hon. Soipan Tuya, Cabinet Secretary of Environment, Forestry, and Climate Change, followed by statements from prominent dignitaries, including Moussa Faki, Chairperson of the African Union Commission; Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission; Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt; Sultan Al Jaber, COP28 President; António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations; Azali Assoumani, President of Comoros; and Kenya’s President, H.E. Dr. William Ruto.
African Heads of State also delivered national climate pledges, shaping the African agenda. The day featured various parallel plenary sessions covering topics such as Climate finance in Africa, regenerative blue economy, scaling up adaptation, critical minerals for green manufacturing, investing in Africa’s food systems, the future of nature in Africa, and renewable energy transitions.
Notably, on the second day of the #ACS23, Kenya seized the opportunity to launch its Green Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, signalling a commitment to economic growth, job creation, environmental stewardship, and the utilisation of green hydrogen in driving the nation’s energy transition.
